Library Guides

Arts, School of (Orientation): Using the library

Introducing using the library

This page includes the Library Search guide, which you can use to help you find print and digital items in the library.

There is also a list of key shelf numbers to help you navigate the library's print collection.

Plus there is information about how to borrow items, the location of the library and library opening hours, and using the printers/scanners.

Library Search Guide

Borrow and return items

Use Library Search to find the location number for items in the library. These use decimal numbers, so 709.12 is before 709.2.

Once you have found the item take it to the self-service machine with your university ID card and carefully follow the instructions on the screen.

How long are books loaned for?

Items are issued for 7 days and renewed daily unless another library user has requested them. If the item is requested, you will get an email asking you to return it within 7 days.

Will I be fined if I return books late?

There are no library fines, but if you fail to return the requested items, your borrowing account will be blocked for as many days as your items are overdue.

How do I return books?

When you have finished with items, please use the self-service machines to return them before placing them in the return slots. You can return books at any site.

Should I reshelve books if using items in the library?

We would prefer it if you leave them on the tables so we have a record of what is being used.

Searching for DVDs

Add the term 'DVD' to search for DVDs on Library Search and limit results to physical items (e.g. Kusama DVD).

Library Space

The Harrow library is one of three libraries in the university, each with long opening hours extending into the weekends.

On the ground floor of the Harrow Library, you will find:

  • the library and Student Centre Help Desk
  • the library search terminals
  • the self-service machines for borrowing and returning books or DVDs
  • the book reservations shelves

What do I do if I cannot find a book?

Note that the numbers used include a decimal point, so 709.12 is before 709.2, and the sequence runs down the shelving units, as shown below.

If you cannot find a book, please let us know. You can request it via the 'Can't find what you need?' service if we cannot locate it in a reasonable time.

Use the printers

Multi-function devices (MFDs) are on every floor of the library - print, photocopy, and scan

  • The university gives full-time students £15 per year towards printing, but this might not be in the first week. Part-time students get £7.50.
  • To use the MFDs send jobs from any computer on the university's wired network, use a USB stick, or submit jobs via 'Webprint' (https://webprint.westminster.ac.uk/).
  • Webprint is also where you can view your printer credit and top up your credit.
