Some older photography books can be borrowed from the Internet Archive, which also has older periodicals, such as these Photography periodicals.  Registration is necessary to access books .  Note - there is currently a legal challenge to the 'controlled digital lending' model the Internet Archive operate.

  The best source in this list for contemporary photography.  Images from the legendary photo collective, with a focus on documentary photography.  Magnum Creative provides a more dynamic browsing experience for selected photographers.  The are also branching out with Magnum Learn (for a fee).  Wikipedia has a list of Magnum photographers.
