Searching our collections

Library Search is good for academic research.  Not only does it list all the books that the library holds, it also provides links to content from most of the periodicals literature that we have access to.

As well as searching for a specific topic that you are interested in, look as well at books that cover a broad area. For example:

Conceptual art
Women artists
Street Photography
Fashion photography
Portrait photography
Photography - History

You may find it useful when starting your research to look at these books which cover broad areas or titles from the Documents in Contemporary Art series which collect together key writing from artists and critics.

More information on searching our collections is available on the School of Arts Library Guide.

Google Books, Google Scholar, and Other Libraries

Google books can also be useful for research, as can Google Scholar.  Google Scholar will link to University of Westminster journal subscriptions if you sign in with your university email address and password.

Information about other libraries including some online libraries is available on the School of Arts Library Guide.

Exhibition catalogues

The library has exhibition catalogues from most of the major museums and galleries on standing order, and collects selectively from others.  See here for the latest titles.

Photobooks

The library has a collection of over 4000 photobooks; you will find them at 799 in the library.  Mostly, these are organised by photographer.  Read an introduction to photobooks here.

See new additions to the photography collection here.

The Genius of Photography

A BBC4 Series on Photography, The Genius of Photography includes interviews and encounters with some of the world's greatest living photographers including William Eggleston, Nan Goldin, William Klein, Martin Parr, Sally Mann, Robert Adams, Juergen Teller, Andreas Gursky, Jeff Wall and many others."

Episodes are: 'Fixing the Shadows', 'Documents for Artists', 'Right Place, Right Time?', 'Paper Movies', 'We Are Family' and 'Snap Judgements'.

Periodicals

Library Search is the best place to start research as the main search provides links to the key journals and many of the key magazines.  However, you may also want to browse or search journals or magazines for your subject.  Most of the key titles for art and photography are available online via Library Search HERE

In addition at the moment we have access to the following photography magazines via Exact Editions:

Foam: International Photography Magazine [via Exact Editions]

Source: The Photographic Review [via Exact Editions]

For photography there are only three academic journals -

History of Photography
Photographies
Photography and Culture

However, there are many more general art journals.  I would recommend the following as good places to start:

Afterall
Oxford Art Journal
October
Leonardo

There are also good articles in some of the high quality magazines available (especially Aperture, and Art Monthly)

The magazines that we take in print are listed below, and many of these are also available online.  You will also find additional titles available online via the research tools listed on this page.
