Reference managers and tools: RefWorks

Overview of Refworks

Using RefWorks, you can:

  • store your references online, so you can access them from any computer
  • automatically insert them into your work to create bibliographies
  • share your references with others

Where to find Refworks

RefWorks is available online at refworks.proquest.com or look for RefWorks in Library Search.

Setting up your account

  • On the RefWorks sign in page, select Use login from my institution
  • Search for University of Westminster from the drop-down list
  • When asked, enter your University email to begin
  • Fill in the profile, entering your name, school and student type
    Your account is now set up.

Importing references

  • From Library Search
    • Next to each entry in Library Search, you will see a menu of actions.  Click the three dots.

    • Choose RefWorks to save that item to your RefWorks library.

    • To send multiple items to your RefWorks library, first save them to your Library Search Favourites by clicking the 'pin' icon next to the item.  In your Favourites list, tick the items you want to send to RefWorks.  At the top of the page, click the three dots and choose RefWorks from the options available.

  • Directly from e-resources
    Most e-resources allow you to download references directly to RefWorks.  You can usually find a 'save or export to RefWorks' action in the Export or Save options for the article or reference you have chosen.  
     

  • Save to RefWorks browser add-on
    Found under Tools,  'Save to RefWorks' is an add-on which can be used to harvest references from webpages.
     

 

Manually adding references
Select the icon from the top menu and choose Create New Reference to manually add references to your RefWorks library.

Creating a bibliography

  • Tick the references you want to add to your bibliography
  • Select the icon from the top menu and choose Create Bibliography.

 

Using RefWorks with Word documents

Found under Tools, the RefWorks plug-in Write-N-Cite adds a RefWorks tab to Word that allows you to insert references and citations directly into your document.
