What is an essay?
An essay is a written work that normally presents analysis, evaluation and an argument on a topic, using references and evidence.
Why are essays a common assignment?
In all probability, you will be expected to write at least one essay during your degree. Why? Essays are an opportunity to demonstrate the advanced cognitive and critical thinking skills that you should develop at university.
Stages of essay writing
To compose an essay, you will need to complete the following steps, which are addressed in the tabs of this guide:
1. Analysis of the essay question to generate ideas and a plan for your work.
2. Research on the topic and critical assessment of a range of sources.
3. Development of a logical structure for the essay.
4. Development of a view in answer to the essay question, based on reading and reasoning.
